Biosecurity for Alpacas

Biosecurity is a set of herd management practices that prevent infectious diseases from being carried into and/or spread in a herd or population.

Alpaca owners have become much more aware of biosecurity due to:

1.  An increase in the alpaca population in the United States in the last few years which leads to an increase in alpaca and people movement and interaction

2.  The increase in alpaca and people movement and interaction has exposed alpaca owners to infectious diseases such as BVDV, ARDS, Lepto

3.  AOBA now requiring negative BVDV test results for entry into sanctioned shows

4.  Commercial transporters requiring negative test results before hauling

5.  Alpaca owners requiring negative test results prior to alpacas entering their farms
