A What? An Alpaca? What's That?
What is an Alpaca?  What are they used for?  How do you care for them?

About Us
After years in the corporate world, Kally decided she wanted a less stressful lifestyle leading up to retirement. She wanted a business that would fit in with Tommy’s agricultural endeavors. They found alpacas fit the bill quite nicely! So in March of 2004 they purchased their first alpacas and since then there has been no stopping them.

Alpaca Facts
Alpacas were a cherished treasure of the ancient Incan civilization and played a central role in the Incan culture that was located on the high Andean Plateau and mountains of South America (Peru, Bolivia, and Chile).

Alpaca Fiber
Alpacas produce one of the world’s finest and most luxurious natural fibers. The beautiful fiber is in high demand because of the low supply of these rare animals.

Alpaca Terminology

History of Our Farm
Cushy Alpacas is one of just a very few alpaca breeders in Louisiana and Mississippi. It’s in an area of the country where little is known about alpacas. Tommy and Kally face the challenge of educating the public and promoting alpacas, alpaca fiber, and alpaca end products all while continuing to thrive as a small breeding farm. Are they up for it? You Bet!

How to Care for Alpacas
Alpacas are small and relatively easy livestock to maintain.

Key Sections to a Business Plan
Your business plan and budgets can be revised as time passes and you gain more insight and experience.  I know it’s not fun, but unless you have unlimited funds, you need to put down on paper what you are going to buy, why, and how much you are going to spend.

Alpacas are camelids -- cousins to camels, llamas, guanacos and vicunas.  They are smaller than llamas and guanacos, but larger than vicunas. Alpacas are about half the size of llamas.

Why Have a Plan?
A predetermined plan will take the confusion out of emergency preparedness and disaster recovery for your farm.

Alpaca Owners Association (AOA) Formerly Alpaca Registry (ARI)
Alpaca Owners Association Inc (AOA) was created by merging the Alpaca Registry, Inc (ARI) and Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA).  The registry is headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska and is the largest alpaca pedigree registry in the world.  It is the only organization of its kind in the United States, but also registers alpacas in Canada and other countries throughout the world.

Emergency Preparedness
In addition to your family and business emergency preparedness plans, make a plan to protect your farm----its’ property, facilities, and animals. Develop a barn safety and evacuation plan that outlines each type of disaster and determines specific scenarios best suited for each situation. It should include a list of resources such as trucks, trailers, pasture and/or feed which might be needed in an evacuation, as well as, a designated person who will unlock gates and doors and make your facility easily accessible to emergency personnel.

Staying Put and Sheltering in Place
If disaster strikes without warning you will need to shelter in place. In other cases you may decide that sheltering in place is the best option. Deciding to stay put and ride out a disaster requires the ability to meet the needs of all humans and animals on your farm. At a minimum you must be prepared to cover the basics of water, food, shelter, power/fuel, medical/veterinary, and communication.

Evacuation Planning
If evacuation is the appropriate choice, preparations should be made as far ahead of time as possible. In most cases it will be impossible to make last minute preparations for such things as animal transportation and shelter. Not only should you prepare ahead of time for the evacuation of your animals, but you should also prepare ahead of time for the safe return of your animals to your farm once the disaster is over.

Disaster Recovery
Disasters, by nature, are catastrophic events that overwhelm the ability of individuals, communities, and regions. During such catastrophic events, many things get damaged including transportation, communications, emotions, and thinking.

Only research that is conducted and evaluated under the peer-review process is funded and 100% of donations to ARF go directly to alpaca research. In addition, ARF works closely with the Morris Animal Foundation, helping to set priorities for research funding and providing monetary support for projects administered through the Llama and Alpaca division of MAF.
